Houston Allergy Season and Your Ductwork: Cutting the Pollen and Dust That Recirculates
Houston does not really have an allergy season so much as an allergy calendar that runs most of the year. Something is usually in the air, and once it gets inside, your air conditioner keeps it moving from room to room. Here is how that recirculation works, what your ductwork has to do with it, and which fixes are worth your money. When is allergy season in Houston? Pretty much always, with the cast of characters changing through the year. Tree pollen shows up in late winter and early spring, which is why February and March can feel rough while the rest of the country is still in winter. Grass pollen takes over in spring and stays through summer. Ragweed and other weeds arrive in the fall. Mold spores are the year-round member of the group, because our humidity keeps damp shady spots active in a way drier climates do not. For a homeowner in the Energy Corridor or Katy, that means there is no long stretch where the outdoor air is simply clean. Instead of timing one big cleanup, you are managing a house that always has a little of the outside coming in. How does pollen get inside in the first place? Mostly on you and through openings. It rides in on clothes, shoes, hair, pet fur and bags, and it comes through the door every time somebody walks in. Once it is on your floors and furniture, walking around stirs it back up into the air. That is where your system enters the story. Return vents pull room air back to the air handler all day, and airborne pollen and dust go with it. The filter catches the bulk of what it is designed to catch. Whatever gets past it, or slips around a poorly fitted filter, ends up in the ducts, on the coil, and eventually back out of a supply vent in another room. The ducts are not creating the problem; the system is doing what it is built to do, which is take air from your rooms and give it back. Why do return leaks matter so much here? Because in most Houston homes the ducts run through a blazing hot attic. When a return duct, a return chase, or the connection at the air handler is not sealed, the system does not just move house air around. It also pulls attic air in through those gaps, and attic air brings fine dust, insulation fibers, and a lot of humidity. You notice this two ways. Dust comes back faster than it should no matter how often you clean, and the extra moisture makes the house feel sticky even when the thermostat is satisfied. The best filter is the highest-rated one your system can actually breathe through. Filter media resists airflow, and denser media resists more. Drop a very restrictive filter into equipment sized for a basic one and airflow falls off, rooms stop cooling evenly, and the system works harder for less. That is a worse outcome than a moderate filter that lets the system move air properly. A few basics that keep you out of trouble: Fit comes before rating. A filter that leaves gaps at the edges lets air go around it, which cancels out whatever you paid for. Mid-range pleated filters are the sweet spot for most residential systems. Very high-rated filters usually belong in equipment set up for them. Change it on time. A clogged high-end filter performs worse than a clean basic one. Do not stack or double up filters. It restricts airflow without adding real benefit. If some rooms are always stuffier than others no matter which filter you use, the issue may be distribution rather than filtration, and ductwork airflow balancing is the part that gets overlooked. What does duct cleaning realistically change? It clears out what has settled in the system. Over years, ducts collect construction dust, drywall powder, pollen that made it past the filter, pet dander and general household grit. Cleaning removes that reservoir along with buildup at the registers, boots and blower. If you see dust on the vent louvers, or get a puff of it when the system starts, that is what you are looking at. What cleaning does not do is stop new material from coming in. Pollen keeps arriving on your shoes, and a leaky return keeps drawing attic dust.
